As an eco-conscious consumer, we know that you prefer to keep your existing items as long as possible before buying something new. But as a health conscious consumer, you know that using certain products daily (like reusable water bottles with plastic parts) can release chemicals and microplastics — proving harmful to you as well as the planet!

So, if you’re looking to make the switch to a 100% plastic free water bottle but don’t want to see your current bottle end up in the landfill, don't worry. We’ve created an easy guide to help you figure out how to make use of your old water bottles while swapping to something safer to sip on!

A stainless steel water bottle being used as a vase for pink roses

Flower vase

Whether your old water bottle is made of glass, plastic, or painted steel, it’ll make an excellent vase to hold bouquets! To hold flowers, the bottle only needs to be cleaned with cool water once in a while when the flowers dry out. This means you can wash it less often, avoid the hot soapy water needed to sanitize it, and therefore reduce the release of its chemicals and microplastics.

Watering can

Prefer your plants to stay in the soil? Old water bottles make excellent watering can alternatives! Simply fill it up to the top and hydrate your houseplants with ease. Since you won’t be drinking out of it, the bottle will only need to be cleaned on rare occasions – reducing its negative impact.

Ice pack

Want to keep something cool? Instead of purchasing a plastic ice pack, repurpose your old plastic water bottles instead. You can freeze uninsulated stainless steel water bottles too, just be sure that it’s not filled up all the way to avoid damaging the bottle with the expansion caused by freezing. Then, simply drop the frozen bottle into a lunch bag or picnic basket – and you’re ready to go!

Rolling pin

For avid bakers, stainless steel water bottles will work wonders as a rolling pin! Simply roll your hands over the top instead of holding handles on the sides. However, since many bottles are painted, we recommend using a piece of eco-friendly wrap in between your bottle and your dough to avoid the paint from flaking off into your food.

An old water bottle being used while camping

Waterproof case

Water bottles are excellent at holding liquids in – but they’re also just great at keeping them out. That means you can use your old bottle to store things like bandages, keys, money, sunscreen, cards, or lip balm whenever you're on the go! This handy trick can be a lifesaver when traveling, camping, or spending a day at the beach.

Piggy bank

One of our favorite ways to put your old water bottle to good use without damaging your health or the planet is to use it as a piggy bank! Keep it in your home and fill it up with coins you collect along the way as a reminder of your commitment to saving the earth. Even better, once the coins reach the top, donate those dollars to conservation efforts!
