A Note About Sustainability & Safety, From Our Founders
An Important Message to Our Loyal Pura Families, Friends & Customers
From Pura’s Founders: Jen and Roger Moore
In light of the current discussion regarding the use of lead in insulated bottles…
We’d like to share the details of the types of soldering materials that we have used in our own bottles. Currently, we use a certified lead-free solder for all our insulated bottles, and no solder in our standard non-insulated bottles. Insulated bottles Pura produced prior to 2017 could have a solder material that contained lead, but as manufactured, provided no lead exposure to the user — as the solder area (or “solder dot”) was at the base of the bottle and covered with stainless steel. All lab testing on the bottles, as sold, showed zero lead exposure.
Regardless, when we discovered in 2017 that the solder dot under the base could have lead, we immediately changed our manufacturing process to include only a certified lead-free solder. We also voluntarily submitted our products to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for full review. The subsequent review resulted in no required change to our product. Additionally, at any of our customer’s requests, we have always replaced any insulated bottle made prior to the change as soon as possible.
Why we’ve always held ourselves to a higher standard of safety…
At Pura, we have always designed our products to meet European standards for children’s products, which are far more strict than US regulations. Furthermore, we were one of the first children’s bottle manufacturers to receive a certification by Made Safe®, a science-based non-profit organization that reviews products, materials and supply chains to certify products are free from over 80,000 known toxins.
Why lead is just the tip of the iceberg…
We’d like to address the many other sources of toxins used in bottles that also can put our families at risk for exposure.
First, several parts of bottles may be made using petroleum-based materials. We advise parents to check that the nipple collar, sippy cover or straw are not made from plastic. Plastic (including other commonly used terms for plastic like polypropylene (PP) including BPA-free plastic, that is known to expose children to chemicals that can disrupt their endocrine levels. These endocrine disruptors can lead to a wide variety of ailments including cancer (you can read more here). Many of the leading bottle manufacturers, apart from Pura, advertise that their products are “BPA-free” and ignore this issue. And many consumers don’t realize that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended using completely plastic-free products since 2018, and that researchers at UCLA have stated that “BPA-free is a marketing scheme”. And furthermore, as we all know, plastic isn’t just bad for our health, but also for our environment. To our knowledge, Pura is the only 100% plastic-free line of bottles, including all glass and stainless steel bottle companies that use plastic lids, collars, straws, and covers.
Secondly, and perhaps just as nefarious, is the paint or powder coating used on these bottles. Powder coatings are polymer-based (read: plastic) and some paints can contain heavy metals; but again these bottle companies hope consumers do not notice this. But we at Pura remain true to our mission to provide products that are truly safe for families, which is why we do not use paint or powder coatings; instead we use more expensive medical-grade platinum silicone sleeves for our bottles. These plastic parts and paints/coatings are why NO other bottle has been Made Safe® certified.
A commitment to safety, quality and sustainability, since day one…
At Pura, our focus is reflected in a famous quote by the great Maya Angelou, “When you know better, you do better.” Pura has made this the central theme to our existence since the company was founded in 2008, and we are proud to offer the safest bottle on the market today, and are humbled by the more than 50 independent product and business awards we’ve received, as well as the trust of our loyal customers around the world.
